Bossa David
David Thornburg is my mentor, after Dizzy. David long ago fell in love with
Brazil, and found the love of his life in Norma Godoy. At their house, they
have two satellite dishes, one which just grazes the horizon, and picks up the
Brazilian satellite, bringing their incredible TV offerings into their home.
David has composed a bossa that we've never been able to rehearse,
so when time came to make this recording, I called him on the phone and asked
him how it went. He picked up his guitar and played a few choruses for me. I
went into my music room, laid down the drums, then the percussion, then the
bass, then the flute, changed it to an mp3 file and emailed it back to him.
Unfortunately, David had written a rhythm that was too hard for
me to play, although I gave it my best shot. The engineer and mystery pianist
liked the tune so much, they convinced me to complete it and include it here,
which I do with apologies to David along the line of "look what they did
to my song, Ma!" Jack enjoyed the tune so much, he jumped out of the control
room and played two wicked flute solos to round out this rendition
On volume II of "Mirrors, Echoes, Bridges" it is my hope that we'll have the composer on a rendition that lives up to the potentials he's challenged us with. Meantime, enjoy the groove!
