Round Midnight

From the first time I played this tune with Dizzy on tour in Maine, I fell in love with this tune. Dizzy himself said that if he had to be left alone on a desert island with just one piece of music to play for the rest of his life, it would be Round Midnight.

This recording marks the first time I was able to craft a solo over these changes, a milestone which gives me courage to expand to other wonderful works I've heard capable musicians play while I was backing them on drums or bass.

Thelonious Monk is one of the most inventive composers in history. His understanding of harmony/dissonance, rhythm/silence, wit/intensity sets a course of study for any aspiring listener or player.
