Contemporary Literacy
through Digital Storytelling
Technology is the big bang that has
propelled literacy into an ever expanding universe. It has always been a two
way street (reading without writing does not add up to literacy), and now the
dimensions for how we take in, process and build new knowledge include many
forms beyond pencil and paper.
"We are nothing more than the
stories we tell" says Jennifer James, a cultural anthropologist. Beyond
this, we realize that it is our questions, rather than the answers, that shape
our future.
There are three projects we plan
on using to build our students' skills for contemprorary literacy. These are:
- Kidlink
- Here is where we will link
with children from around the globe, after answering The Four Questions:
Who Am I? What do I want to be when I'm grown up? How do I want the world
to be when I'm grown up? What can I do now to make it that way?
- Big6
- Here is where we'll develop
Information Problem Solving skills, and tools. Community workshops on
"Helping with Homework" will
be offered at EJ and other community schools soon...keep watching this
page for dates and times!
- Our Stories
- Whether it's What's Up? with
Sixth Grade!, What's Up? In Fifth! or other news gathering, storytelling
projects, EJ students are entering the world of online publishing. Watch
this space for their latest products! See the materials for the Teacher
Workshops.
