Community Connections

Children Chernobyl and the Internet
One of OII's first projects saw students in a Princeton middle school join with students in Russia to assist a classmate who was a victim of the Chernobyl disaster.  Their political action enabled Vova Malofienko, fifth grader at Millburn Middle School to remain in the United States to receive the cancer treatment he needed to save his life.

The Etajima Story
An 82 year-old ex-GI came to Southern Regional High School with a picture of ten Japanese children he had taken more than fifty years earlier one an island off the coast of Hiroshima, about three months after the dropping of the A-bomb. Through the efforts of OII, the Japanese teacher, three students and help from Internet contacts, they were able to identify all ten and participate in a video conference that provided memories for a lifetime.

The Photo Journals of Ed Schwartz
In a classic display of how the community connections can grow, after seeing a local news report of the Etajima project, 92 year-old Ed Schwartz contacted OII member, Art Wolinsky with a set of photos of Okinawa natives, he had taken around the same time period. Two of Art's students interviewed Ed and created this site.

The Storm of 1992
Four years later, now 96 year-old Ed Schwartz contacted Art with pictures he had taken during the 1992 storm that hit the New Jersey shore.  The storm is well known for the beach erosion it caused, but less known was the beaching of hundreds of thousands of clams.  Ed's camera and words preserve that moment in time.
