 Hi folks,

Daniel Goleman's recent book, Emotional Intelligence, has some profound  implications for the online communities that are forming on the Internet, particularly those that are focused upon lifelong learning. Beyond the media headline treatment of his work ("there's more to being smart than IQ"  being a typical sound-byte), Goleman reminds us about "the most basic of all knowledge: how to learn."

Seven key elements to this important capacity are all related to emotional intelligence.

  • Confidence
The belief that more likely than not, you will be able to succeed at what you undertake, and that others will help you.
  • Curiosity
The sense that finding out about things is positive and leads to pleasure.
  • Intentionality
The wish and capacity to have an impact and act upon that with persistence.
  • Self-Control
The ability to modulate and control your own actions in age appropriate ways.
  • Relatedness
The ability to engage with others based on the sense of being understood by and understanding others.
  • Communication
The capacity to know what you know, express what you need to know, and how you can share these observations with others.
  • Cooperativeness
The ability to enhance your energy and effectiveness by combining strengths and aligning skills with others. (Requires all of the above skills)

As we alternately struggle, stumble and soar in our efforts to discover and invent new ways of relating that blend the incredible stimulation of online environments with the important challenges we face in our  "non-virtual" lives, I hope you find it as encouraging as I do that much of what we're about supports these seven elements that strengthen learning at any age. Certainly, there's already much evidence of individual and  collective growth in these areas as we approach the first birthday of the Online Internet Institute, as there has been in the excellent partner communities with whom we've been lucky to work.

This work is often hard,  the stakes are high, but may the satisfaction and joy keep all of us confident, curious, and intentional, as we relate, communicate and collaborate! (OK, maybe self control has a way to go ;->)
