Avoiding the Mouse Trap

Is surfing the web the latest x-treme sport?

What to do if you come across a pornography site instead of a legitimate site.

One or two companies are responsible for taking over thousands, if not tens of thousands of previously legitimate sites, turning them into pornography fronts and offering to sell the name for 10-20 times its actual registration cost.

The practice porn-napping sites and the frequency of encountering these sites, is increasing significantly. Each day the practice continues, the more likely you or one of your students will encounter one of these sites.

I want to stress that if you are filtering, the major companies are blocking the sites as quickly as they are being reported.  It is more likely you or your students will encounter this problem at home than in school. Even if you never encounter it, being prepared won't hurt. Here is what to expect and what to do. .

Below is the most common screen you will encounter.  (There are others) If you chance upon one of these sites and attempt to exit or use the Back button, your mouse will be trapped. You will be taken to a casino or a porn site. This will happen for a MINIMUM of three screens.

If you don't try to get out, and know what to do you can probably prevent your mouse from being trapped. This is important for two reasons. The first and most obvious is that no one wants screen after screen of pornography displaying in class.  The second and less obvious reason is that the mouse trapping actually generates revenue for the company who set the mouse trap and feeds the profit motive that drives the practice of taking over legitimate sites and installing porn.

Here is what to do to prevent the mouse trap.

There are two methods described below the diagram. The first is the simplest and usually the most effective.

Method 1:

Hold down the ALT key and press F4.  This closes the window. In the case of multiple windows popping up, you can do this repeatedly and rapidly.

Method 2:

1) Look for is a button that is offering to sell the domain name.
2) Click on it and a screen will come up with a form to fill out.
3) DON'T FILL ANYTHING OUT
4) At this point, you have foiled the mouse trap.
Close the browser using X in the upper right corner of the window.
Don't use the Back Button.  Just close all windows and start again.
