GEOMETRY MINIMAL DISTANCE PROJECT

The Southern Regional High School District is planning to build a new bus depot. In the new depot all of the buses that transport students to the three largest centers of population in the District- which are Ocean Acres, Beach Haven West, and Barnegat - will be located. The Board of Education is collecting data from different experts in the community on the environmental, social, and financial aspects of the choice. The geometry classes have been asked to determine the location which would be the shortest total distance to the three areas. In order to assist you with this task, you will be provided with a map with the centers of these areas marked A, B, and C. You will also be provided with a map and worksheet* with these three points labeled so that you can experiment with different locations.

Organize the data you collected when you constructed different points into a chart or table. Decide which point is the best location for the bus depot keeping in mind the condition that the total distance to the three centers of population be the shortest. Locate your point on the map of the area.

Write a proposal providing written support to the Board of Education substantiating your choice based on your data. If your location is to be considered for the location of the bus depot discuss what you think the other experts (environmental, social, etc.) would think of your location.

Grading Criteria and Rubric

Project will count a 100 point test. You will be graded on the following parts of the project:

1. Construction Worksheets
   A. Accuracy of constructions
   B. Thoroughness of investigation
2. Chart/Table-Organized Clearly and Completely
3. Written Proposal
   A. Supportive evidence for chosen point
   B. Insight into other factors affecting location
